TECH SCEnE: Technology, Science and Community Engagement in Engineering

A new summertime analysis system connects biomedical, biological sciences and electrical
engineering college students to Indigenous communities, environmental overall health and technological
options.

Study experiences for undergraduates (REUs) are packages sponsored by the Nationwide
Science Basis (NSF) and are compensated summertime analysis prospects for college students.
TECH SCEnE, a new REU at Michigan Technological College, builds an interdisciplinary
basis in STEM and local community engagement for college students centered in science, technological innovation,
engineering and math parts. Just about every analysis undertaking was designed in partnership with
staff from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Group (KBIC) Natural Methods Department.

Use to TECH SCEnE

Applications are because of Could 1, 2021. Study extra about the system and how it combines hands-on undergraduate analysis in the lab with outdoor adventure
and service studying, with absolutely free housing and a stipend, far too. All applicants will listen to
back by Could 15, 2021. The system aims to recruit college students from throughout the US and increase visibility for
MTU and its analysis abilities.

“Our analysis is directly addressing KBIC priorities,” reported Valoree Gagnon, director
of College-Indigenous Group Partnerships at Michigan Tech’s Terrific Lakes Study
Center. “While KBIC guides our work during the REU system, we are also contributing
to a broader need to have in analysis — how to build and strengthen equitable college-local community
partnerships.”

Gagnon, a analysis assistant professor in the College of Forest Methods and Environmental
Science at Michigan Tech, will provide as a TECHSCEnE undertaking mentor together with Smitha
Rao.

“It is not generally that college students get the option to directly address the demands of
a local community,” reported Rao, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Michigan
Tech. “For college students who want to see how their contributions can make an affect, how
software of science and technological innovation can present options to difficulties, this is an
incredible system.”

A common working day in the TECH SCEnE REU system entails analysis, participate in and constructing connection. Rao urges college students to implement for
the system, which has home for about 12 college students this summertime: “Whether you are a
student in local community college or tribal college or a college, TECH SCEnE is an NSF
REU system structured to enable you the two learn and implement your knowledge.”

REU student scientists continue to be in the dorms at Michigan Tech for eight months in a committed
TECH SCEnE studying local community the system kicks off June 7, 2021, and runs by way of
July 30, 2021. All work in the lab, in the local community and in the discipline is guided by
a Michigan Tech college mentor like Rao and Gagnon as very well as a KBIC mentor. Collaborating
college students will concentration on 1 of five STEM analysis initiatives:

In addition, every week college students will go on a selection of service-studying outdoor discipline
trips guided by the KBIC. Together with Rao and Gagnon, Michigan Tech college mentors
include things like Rupali Datta, Department of Organic Sciences Chris Middlebrook, Nagesh
Hatti and Zhaohui Wang, Department of Electrical and Computer system Engineering and Bruce
Lee, Department of Organic Engineering. Mentors from the KBIC Natural Methods
Department include things like Natural Methods Director Evelyn Ravindran, environmental specialist
Dione Cost, wildlife biologist Erin Johnston, and wildlife coordinator David Seppanen.

NSF resources a big number of REUs by way of its REU Web pages system. An REU Website is composed of a group of 10 or so undergraduates who work in the analysis
packages of the host establishment. Just about every student is affiliated with a unique analysis
undertaking, doing work carefully with the college and other scientists.

TECH SCEnE is analysis with affect. Use and enable make a big difference in meals sovereignty,
overall health tech innovation and environmental monitoring.

Michigan Technological College is a general public analysis college, household to extra than
7,000 college students from fifty four international locations. Established in 1885, the College delivers extra than
one hundred twenty undergraduate and graduate degree packages in science and technological innovation, engineering,
forestry, company and economics, overall health professions, humanities, arithmetic, and
social sciences. Our campus in Michigan’s Higher Peninsula overlooks the Keweenaw Waterway
and is just a handful of miles from Lake Remarkable.
