A Lithium-Ion Battery That Works Even When It’s on Fire

Again in the early nineties, when local firefighters acquired a connect with from Moli Vitality, they knew just exactly where to head: the company’s battery warehouse. The Vancouver-centered organization was the initial to mass make rechargeable lithium-steel batteries. But the batteries experienced a nasty practice of exploding, which at some point led to a massive remember that bankrupted the organization.

30 decades have passed, but today’s lithium-ion batteries are nonetheless wont to blow up. One perpetrator is the liquid electrolyte, a normally flammable natural solvent that facilitates the flow of ions concerning a battery’s electrodes. Replacing this flamable materials with a good, some argue, could make safer batteries.

The fact, having said that, is under no circumstances as easy. Stable-state electrolytes, whilst undoubtedly fewer flammable than their liquid counterparts, are not fully immune to fires both. But that could now transform, thanks to new technology produced by a group led by Yi Cui, a supplies scientist at Stanford College.
